 Well, now we can all make a donation to silence porn in Northampton. The folks at NoPornNorthampton have been sanctioned by the Attorney General’s office to solicit funding in the name of keeping Northampton gentrified and wholesome for the kids. Seriously, though, how could anyone not agree that pornography is degrading to women, that it supports unhealthy sexual expectations, and that it contributes to a patriarchy that seeks to subdue and marginalize female independence and power? The idea pornography is appropriate because women (and men) choose at their own free will to get paid to perform sexual acts, which are often unhealthy and humiliating, is ignorant at best. That’s like saying that if someone wants to be a suicide bomber, they should somehow be allowed to, as it is an expression of their own free will as protected by the first amendment. Wha? Clearly, a person should be able to create a business anywhere legal, provided there is an audience and business need for it. But why would anyone want to patronize a place that sells something so potentially harmful to society on a larger scale than providing someone some good masturbating material? Why not just get some good, love-promoting erotica?
