Sunday, October 22, 2006 -  The Other Brown Energy

City health official Ernest J. Mathieu has placed a moritorium on wood-burning boilers in Northampton until January 31, 2007. According to the EPA, the alternative energy source, despite costing far less to operate than an oil-based boiler system, produces as much particulates as a diesel-engine truck or bus! The practice is a cause of alarm for neighbors of wood-fired boilers (which are placed out-of-doors, unlike those cellar-based oil systems) due to the heavy, low-lying smoke that is produced by the burning wood. The smoke can get into neighboring houses, and cause respiritory issues among other things, like making your house smell like a campsite.

What's worse anyway? Destorying ecosystems to drill for oil, or destroying ecosystems to log wood for home-heating? Didn't the pioneers use some other brown, "renewable" substance to heat their homes?

Apparently, Mathieu only knows one of wood-fired boiler in town anyway...
